MARI DeMARIS

Artist Statement

I love making collages. The immediacy of their creation suits me. I use a variety of papers painted with acrylic paint and/or coated with acrylic mediums. My use of “found objects” such as beads, linen thread, gold particles, and other minutiae gives a tactile quality to a collage, adding interest and tension.

Some of my collages deal with books, altered pages, and journals—all of a secret and cryptic nature. I consider tem to be intimate, introspective, and subjective.

Many of my collages are done on paper and are framed under glass. I also have created collages on canvas combined with acrylic paint, thus giving an immediate feeling to the work.  This series of collages represents night landscapes. My recent works present small representative books in a three dimensional format.

I am originally from Philadelphia PA. I attended Hood College in Frederick MD, studied art at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia , and art history at George Washington University in DC. I have also taken many classes at the Art League School in Alexandria , VA. During my husband’s career as a Naval Officer we lived in Hawaii , London , and Baltimore . I have lived and worked in the Washington area since 1968.

I have shown my art work and had many solo shows in the area. I am a member of Touchstone Gallery, The Art League, WPA Corcoran, DC, Roving Artists, FCCA Fairfax, VA, and The Arlington Art Center.
