BETSY FORSTER

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I started painting as a landscape painter because of a sense of awe and identification with the land itself.  Like the Northern romantic painters who sought the supernatural in the natural; I, too, seek that spiritual connection with nature.  Having spent many hours painting outside on sight, I now divide my painting time between en plein air painting and time in my studio either developing those paintings or creating new works which are inspired by the work outside.

I was born in Madera , California , but spend most of my childhood in Dallas , Texas . Childhood memories of the brown hills of California and the big skies of Texas drive me west, and I spend much of my time painting in and around Jackson, Wyoming—a place where my soul is fed.

Education includes: BA in Elementary Education, Austin College, Sherman, Texas; A in Art, Auburn University, Montgomery, Alabama, MFA in painting, American University, Washington, D.C.
