Founded in 1976 by 30 artists, Touchstone Gallery opened its doors on P Street, NW, in Dupont Circle, which was then the primary gallery area in Washington DC.

Touchstone Gallery has maintained a reputation for exhibiting contemporary work of high quality, vision and innovation. Its dedicated membership has demonstrated the gallery’s unwavering commitment to this standard.

From the start, Touchstone has been involved with the DC community and with philanthropic outreach in and beyond DC. The gallery participates at local, national and international levels, balancing its members’ shows with ongoing art outreach.

We have partnered with Oxfam’s famine relief art auction; we participated in the International Sculpture Center’s Washington conference by installing outdoor sculpture; we provided dozens of small works to the homeless shelter founded by renowned activist Mitch Snyder; and we exhibited works by the children of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

After almost 20 successful years in the Dupont Circle area, the desire for growth motivated Touchstone’s relocation to 7th Street, NW, in the historic Penn Quarter neighborhood of Washington. For 15 years there, we held successful exhibitions and exciting events in the most spacious quarters we had occupied up to that time. However, in 2009 the building’s development plans and rising costs forced the gallery to close its doors on 7th Street and seek new quarters.

In August 2010, Touchstone celebrated the opening of its newest location in its custom built space at 901 New York Avenue. Located between the Washington Convention Center and the National Women’s Museum, this street level venue is both easily accessible and is the most elegant space in its history. The gallery’s unwavering commitment to high aesthetic values continues to be fueled by the support and dedication of its member artists.

Since 1976, Touchstone’s mission remains unaltered: to encourage artistic and career growth for its members, to offer opportunities for artists to interact with other artists and art professionals, and to interact with the DC community to enhance and encourage appreciation of the arts.
