Why "Black and White"?
When I was asked to do several black and white paintings for a collector, I could not stop. When I finally came up for air I was well on my way with enough work for this solo show.
This series of oil or acrylic paintings on canvas are all squares, formal compositions and a limited palette. Non-traditional materials, such as string, paper yarn and objects that relate to the fiber arts create a textured surface that add interest to the simple, quiet style I try very hard to maintain.
Having been a printmaker for 25 years had a profound influence on my artistic evolution. The black and white palette as well as the subtle etched areas that were hand-wiped with oil paint are reminiscent of the etching process.
Over the years, I have found that what really works for me in my creative process is to limit myself. Design, color palette, the materials I choose must have some restraints or I'm off in another direction - which it did for this exhibit. The encaustic (wax) paintings are a new exploration but by limiting the color, the format and the size, the encaustic pieces add another element of surprise.
The more I work, the more my mind wanders into other worlds creating more ideas and future projects. Can't wait to see what happens next.
