MCCAIN MCMURRAY

About the Artist

McCain McMurray’s work is not about capturing an image, but about capturing the essence of the natural and constructed world in its most fundamental forms. Sometimes, he works from the memory of a place or object–instilling his feelings and experiences into his paintings. Other work can be inspired simply by color, shape, or process. The result is an ordered or structured composition of clear color, subtle textures, and orthogonal forms stripped of their essence.

Within the work, elements often emerge with their own identity through the intention and coincidence of the painting process. This process results in freedom to take advantage of serendipity and the surprises it can bring. A large portion of McMurray’s art has been informed by his career in architecture, wherein he abstracts architectural elements using structure, colors, textures, and layering.

McMurray’s art career sparked from his inspiration upon seeing a sculptural exhibition by Anne Truit at the Hirshhorn Museum. Stemming from his work as an architect of 30 years (M.Arch, North Carolina State University), he translated his practice from drawing and building to painting and creating. Since March 2018, McCain has operated the Yuma Street Studio in Washington D.C.
