DEB FUREY
About the Artist
Deb Furey is known for her work in mixed media painting. Furey has attended Massachusetts College of Art and the Museum School in Boston. Furey has been a member of Circle Gallery and Foundry Gallery, with her work being shown in numerous juried exhibitions. She currently works in the DC area.
Furey’s work has taken two tracks, especially of late. The first is based on her passion for photography and collage and second focuses on large scale drawings and paintings of characters representing emotions and experience. Furey feels there is a relationship between both tracks in the patterns of contrasting dark and light and juxtaposition of unlikely images and objects. Within the mixed media photo collage work, Furey assembles and places images together in ways that are satisfying as she goes through the process of collecting and photographing objects that she finds meaningful for her. Furey is very fascinated by the random things that occur in the photography/painting/collage process that she can then react to. Furey then collages, paints, and writes into them with acrylic, ultimately using oil as last layers. For the large-scale drawings/paintings of characters, Furey is more intentionally exploring her take on life, relationships, dilemmas, desires. While she was trained to draw/paint realistically, Furey is consistently trying to deconstruct how she draws and builds images. Furey continues to explore both tracks, merging drawing and photocollage specifically.
