String Theory by Elena Tchernomazova

Opening Reception: Friday, April 13, 6 - 8:30pm

“String theory” is first solo show by Elena Tchernomazova, Russian-born physicist. In particle physics, String Theory is a contender for a universal theory of everything. Applied to arts, for example music has an obvious analogy: a guitar string produces distinct musical notes similar to the vibrations of these hypothetical very small strings.

Some of Elena’s works refer to a specific quality of our space-time and the structure of our Universe. The Greek Moirae (Parka, The Fates) knit and control the metaphorical thread of life, which can be easily visualized as a string that exists for every mortal from birth to death.

Working in white stoneware with varied underglazes, she creates hand-built ceramics which reach back to ancient Greece and various Eurasian mythological traditions for their inspiration.

Her works often combine the human face or figure with architectural elements, musical instruments, and mythological or real animals. The overall effect is at once surreal, unsettling, and subtly comforting

Elena started to take art classes at Montgomery College in 2001 because she wanted to study fine arts and to attain a second degre.e She already has master’s degree in physics from Russia. She took a lot of art classes in various mediums like painting, printmaking, ceramics, and every new subject made her learn and study even more. She immersed herself deeper and deeper into arts, so that right now she can’t imagine her life without it.
