Opening Reception: Saturday, October 16, 2 – 4 pm

Touchstone Gallery is honored to present an exhibition ‘Tribute to Tim Johnson’ from October 15 through October 31, 2021. The show will highlight a selection of his work documenting his journey as a gifted portrait artist, storyteller and member of Touchstone Gallery for 10 years.
Touchstone Gallery closed its physical space in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The gallery continued to operate online with virtual monthly exhibits, Zoom opening receptions and Instagram artist talks. Touchstone renovated and reconfigured the layout of its street level gallery space and is reopening 18 months later.
Sadly, Tim passed away in December of last year.
Tim relished the outlandish and the unpredictable. This was obvious in his last solo show at Touchstone, in October 2019, ‘Fables of Decapitation: I Knew I Would Die a Long Time Ago.’ As a technician he was at the pinnacle of his artistic skill. He mastered recreating flesh and musculature in a painterly, yet controlled manner. He loved dazzling color and was not afraid to go big. His handmade frames, reflecting his daytime profession, added whimsy and brilliance to each work.
A recipient of a 2014 fellowship grant from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, Tim used friends, colleagues and himself as models in his paintings. Over the years his paintings delighted viewers with subtle symbolism, humor and knowledge of fables, myths, and the Bible. This is the legacy that Tim Johnson, a longtime local and beloved artist, left to us.
Join us at Touchstone Gallery on Saturday, October 16, from 2 to 4 pm for a celebration and commemoration of Tim and his work. ‘Tribute to Tim Johnson’ is open to viewers during current gallery hours, Friday through Sunday from 12 to 5 pm.
Per artist request artist's artwork sales proceeds will go to Touchstone Foundation for the Arts (TFA).
