“OFF the SQUARE”
Mary H. Lynch
Reception: Friday, September 9, 6-8:30pm
Mary Lynch's new work continues her 30 years of exploring canvas as a sculptural medium. Mary builds an armature on which the canvas is stretched. Her craftsmanship speaks to the acquired knowledge of her materials. She translates the landscape of ordinary objects into abstract patterns or geometric grids. It is this experimentation with color, light and shape that still intrigues, frustrates and thrills her. One of the works on view is "Construct: Deconstruct" which is her interpretation of the mystery of the vanishing bees. Another evokes the working of a crossword puzzle which is again a mystery of the solved or unsolved.
Her interest in challenging the traditional use of canvas began off the coast of Brittany, France, in 1979. She was part of a group of students studying landscape painting during a summer semester. Everyone was perched on top the cliffs in an attempt to paint the great expanse of the ocean and the craggy cliffs. It was while studying this view that she began to feel that the flat rectangular canvas was insufficient to interpret her view of the scene. Since that time she has been exploring the shaping of canvas into wall reliefs. Over the years she have experimented with different surfaces which range from oil, acrylic and metal patinas. She selects each with differing effects in mind. It seems that each shape she works with inspires the new work.
