This piece is based on the view from my bedroom window in my family's cabin in the Shenandoah Mountains. When I look out in the morning, I think of all the journeys this little spot of land has sustained. The people who lived nearby for generations and were expelled and journeyed away for the vanity of a man who wanted a park. Mrs. Austin, from whom we bought the land, who journeyed away because at 92 she could no longer care for herself. Her many descendants who journey back from time to time to the place that is a touchstone in their hearts. The deer, the bear, the rabbits, the foxes, all the animals who journey the paths on a daily basis. Even my husband and I, who journey to and from almost weekly. This land calls to us all. The journeys connect us.
