MARY LAGNAOUI
About the Artist
For Mary Lagnaoui, painting involves a plan, a search, and a surprise. She begins with an idea in mind, firmed up into a sketch, but it is not until she has explored on canvas that she sees an image coming into being. One drop of blue over another darker blue changes the feeling of the purple next to it, or a brushstroke pulls an edge closely in. Shape, line, and color mix and build to bring forth what she is looking for, imagining, realizing, and sometimes surprised to find.
Her current series carries a theme of connection, with faces searching and discovering, too. In this set of paintings, she tries to show how a person is alone or connected to others, with vitality or resignation in the eyes, a willfulness or surrender, and the face immersed in feeling. Mary Lagnaoui's paintings explore themes inspired by her observations, imagination, dreams, and memory.
Mary’s current drawings and paintings focus on nature, as she chooses from palettes of sky, water, plants, and weather she observes in daily walks to create colors and moods of a forest or river scene.
