SUE CANUTESON
About the Artist
Memories of Marks & Symbols 16, mixed media on paper, 14” x 14”
Sue Canuteson is a non-objective mixed media artist based in Alexandria, Virginia. Canuteson’s work has been exhibited in various galleries in the Washington, DC area and across the country since 2018.
Organic shapes and lines as well as innate marks are Canuteson’s primary inspiration. Her interest lies in exploring the unique nature of different shapes, their relation to one another, and the feelings that conveys. Canuteson is also fascinated by all kinds of lines and the impactful ways they contribute to a composition. She finds that she is particularly drawn to colors, marks, and patterns in early African art and sees that influence in her work, especially in her ongoing series, Memories of Marks & Symbols.
Canuteson works on paper as well as canvas and panel — in a range of mixed media (acrylics, inks, collage, charcoal/graphite and oil sticks/pastels). She also uses a variety of brushes, including some handmade ones. Her ultimate goal is to create a cohesive painting that touches some in the most inexplicable ways. She believes therein lies the magic in non-objective art.
