SUFIE BERGER

About the Artist

Sufie Berger is a painter working with topics of perception; analyzing how memory and events translate from her perception to viewers’ comprehension. She believes everything carries a story, and sees the interpretation of moments in art as the perfect metaphor for who we are and an analogy for the impermanence of life. Questioning how one fundamentally preserves or demonstrates anything perceived, Berger explores how reality and the mind co-exist and bond to ensue and materialize. Whether she is painting, photographing, or sketching, that story feels essential to her as the billions of us together define and learn from each other’s points of view.

She primarily works with acrylic gouache on canvas and paper, but will also incorporate collage, printing, and paper cutting in her artworks. Berger is interested in women’s issues and environmentalism, and intends for her art to be instrumental in the journey towards a kinder, gentler, and more inclusive society.

Berger received her B.A. in Art Education in Brazil, where she was born and raised, before moving to the United States. For ten years, while raising her family, Sufie studied oil painting under Trinka Margua Simon at the Smithsonian. In 2009, she was awarded 1st Prize in the Smithsonian's Painting with the Masters program for her studies and creative interpretation of landscape master JMW Turner. She now resides in Washington, D.C. where she teaches and works full time at her art studio.
