Opening Reception: Saturday, March 29 from 5-8 pm
Constellations is a solo exhibition by Elena Tchernomazova, featuring more than two dozen ceramic sculptures. The artwork is dedicated to the artist’s first professional love—astronomy. Both before and after receiving a Master’s Degree in astrophysics from the Moscow Government University, she worked at two Caucasus Mountains observatories as a laboratory assistant and later junior scientist. From the time she was a teenager, Tchernomazova held a deep fascination with astronomy and cosmology; independently learning all of the northern hemisphere constellations and their corresponding mythology.
Tchernomazova has been practicing ceramics for nearly 20 years, which she studied at Montgomery College. Her works are hand-built, often with elements of surrealism. The majority of her inspiration is derived from various Eurasian mythological traditions and the art of Medieval Europe, Ancient Greece and Rome, the Middle East, India and China.
